Under the Surface of Our Voices
Thu 31 Jan @ 6:00 PM - 8:30 PMFree
Join us during the Durham Vocal Festival for an evening with the Northern Spirit Singers, winners of Adult Choir of the Year 2014, and Quintessential Voices. They will perform ‘Under the Surface’, a choral-piece written by award-winning composer Toby Young, accompanied by various other pieces.
‘Under the Surface’, initially commissioned for the Feel It Festival 2016, is inspired by the research of the Life of Breath team, whose aim is to explore the experiences of those affected by breathlessness.
After the performance, there will be an interval to provide the opportunity to view Palace Green Library’s special exhibition Catch Your Breath (24 November 2018 – 17 March 2019). Catch Your Breath explores the ways in which we use our breath to carry out ordinary and extraordinary activities, as well as how we might help those experiencing breathlessness.
This interlude will be followed by wine and a panel discussing the singing process, from both artistic and physiological perspectives. We will be joined by a medical practitioner, the ‘Under the Surface’ composer Toby Young, Northern Spirit Singers’ musical director Clare Wills, and Quintessential Voices’ musical director Mark Anyan, accompanied by members of the choirs.
Tickets for the evening are free. However, due to venue capacity, tickets are limited for the panel discussion and wine as this will be hosted in Courtyard Café, Palace Green Library. Please ensure you purchase the correct ticket according to the aspects you wish to attend. BOOK HERE
Both the Wolfson Gallery (located upstairs with elevator access) and the Courtyard Café have disabled access. Disabled parking is also available; please let us know in advance.
