RCP Lates July – Breath and Poetry

On the first Thursday of the month the Royal College of Physicians Museum opens its doors for a series of free Museum Late events. Giving visitors the chance to experience more than 500 years of history at England’s oldest medical college.
During Catch Your Breath, you can join a special curator-led tour and join in themed activities led by members of the Life of Breath project team and our collaborators.
The programme for Thursday 4 July is all about the breath and poetry! Catch Your Breath Writer-in-Residence and poet Christy Ducker will lead some fantastic drop-in poetry writing sessions to demonstrate how respiration can act as inspiration. There is no need to book for these sessions. Just book here for the whole evening and come along to as many as you like!

Let in the Air (with Christy Ducker) – 5.30pm
A poetry workshop on the theme of breath and breathing. Join poet Christy Ducker for a writing workshop which explores the language of breath and breathlessness. Expect to play with breath in the poetic line and ‘oxygenate’ your poetry by writing from the body. Suitable for all abilities.
Making the Invisible Visible (with Christy Ducker) – 6.50pm
A showcase of poetry by Christy Ducker and Durham & Derwentside Breathe Easy support group, with a screening of Kate Sweeney’s film-poems about breath and respiratory health. This work was developed from Christy and Kate’s residency at the original Catch Your Breath exhibition, Palace Green Library, Durham. To be followed by an audience Q&A.
Catch Your Breath (with Christy Ducker) – 7.20pm
A poetry workshop that drawing on inspiration from art and artefacts from the Catch Your Breath exhibition. Join poet Christy Ducker to write in response to exhibits and ideas from around the world. Expect to think about breath and respiratory health in new ways. Suitable for all abilities.
Christy Ducker is a poet and teacher of creative writing. Her first full-length collection Skipper was published in 2015, and includes work commended by the Forward Prize judges. Her pamphlet Armour (2011) was a PBS Pamphlet Choice. Two further pamphlets Heroes (2016) and Messenger (2017) have since followed. Her commissions include residencies with Port of Tyne, English Heritage, Edinburgh Surgeons’ Hall Museum, and York University’s Centre for Immunology and Infection; she also devised and directed North East Heroes, an archives and education project funded by Arts Council England. Christy has recently been working as a research fellow on poetry and health, at Newcastle University’s Institute for Creative Arts Practice.
