Cafe Breath: The Invisibility of Breathlessness
Thu 7 Feb @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PMFree
A key theme of the Life of Breath project, which inspired the Catch Your Breath exhibition, has been ‘invisibility’. We all know that breath is invisible, except on cold winter days when our breath condenses in the frosty air. But there are many dimensions to the invisibility of breath some of which have serious impact on people for whom breathing is difficult. Breathless people are invisible in our society – when is the last time you saw someone struggling for breath in the street? The reasons for this are only partly physical; they are also socio-political and derive from the stigma and shame breathless people feel about their condition.
In this relaxed evening talk, Prof Jane Macnaughton, Principal Investigator on the Life of Breath project, will describe the invisibility of breathlessness: its physiological, cultural and political origins and discuss ways of addressing it.
The event will take place in the Courtyard Café and will include a free glass of wine. Due to limited ticket numbers, please ensure that you book in advance via Eventbrite to avoid disappointment.
